Weekend Tasting: “Domaine Macle, tradition and excellence”
Stretching 80 kilometers along the Revermont and 6 kilometers wide, the Jura vineyards are small in size at just 2000 hectares, but big in diversity.
Founded in Château-Chalon in 1850, the Macle estate has stood the test of time with a consistency of excellence that commands unanimous respect.
Mayor of Château-Chalon for four terms, from 1977 to 2001, the man nicknamed the “Pope of Vin Jaune”, Jean Macle, had a profound influence on the history of the estate.
Today, his son Laurent, the sixth generation, runs the estate with a masterful hand. Despite their international reputation, the Macle family has always kept a low profile.
Their vineyards, on the steepest slopes of Château-Chalon, are planted exclusively with white grapes, 80% Chardonnay and 20% Savagnin.
Aged in barrels in contact with the air, under veil and not topped up for 3 years, their Côtes-du-Jura are the great singularity of the region. With their aromas of rancio, ripe apple, fresh walnut and curry, they are a marvel with an old Comté cheese or the famous poularde aux morilles.
