More than a discovery, Alexandre Chartogne-Taillet’s nectars are an obvious choice in the world of terroir champagnes. Situated just a few kilometers from the famous Montagne de Reims, in Merfy, this family-run business dazzles with the precision of its choices and its philosophy.
A family winemaker since the 16th century, Alexandre Chartogne-Taillet took over the reins of the family domaine in 2006, bringing a new sensibility and convictions to the champagnes he produces. Trained by the best of his generation, the emblematic Anselme Selosse, Alexandre has retained from this experience a passion for parcel-based vinification and an immeasurable respect for plants and nature.
A geology buff, he is passionate about the soils that give birth to his grapes and does everything in his power to reveal their typical characteristics. With a rich diversity of soils to choose from, Alexandre puts his talent and instinct to work in the true geological mosaic of the forty hectares of Merfy vineyards. Soil cultivation with horses to encourage microbial life to flourish, a total absence of synthetic products and indigenous yeasts are the order of the day at this house where terroir is the star and the winemaker his humble servant.
The result is champagnes of incredible depth and purity, with breathtaking balance. Far from the standardized taste that has long been legion in Champagne, the wines offered by Alexandre Chartogne-Taillet are vibrant with sincerity and singularity.
