In Chassagne-Montrachet, the Moreau family has been at the head of an estate capturing the finest expressions of Chardonnay on the Côte de Beaune since the 19th century. The arrival of the latest generation at the end of the 1990s confirms the domaine’s status as an essential reference.
Alexandre and Benoît, Bernard Moreau’s sons, benefit from an exceptional winegrowing heritage, assembled plot by plot by their father and grandfather. United on the estate for almost 20 years, Benoît in the vineyards and Alexandre in the cellar, the two brothers have seen their paths separate since 2020. Alexandre continues the original epic accompanied by his wife Martine, while Benoît has created his own domaine, comprising part of the family estate’s vineyards. The Bernard Moreau estate (now 5.7 hectares) represents an ideal playground for Alexandre, a demanding enthusiast who leaves nothing to chance. An organic approach is favored in the vines, which benefit from biodynamic preparations and frequent ploughing, thus preserving the soil’s microbial life. In the cellar, respect for the juices is the order of the day, with very moderate use of new wood and almost no stirring of the lees to allow the grapes to freely express their intrinsic aromas. A single objective: to capture the true expression of each terroir and transcribe it into the bottle. This quest for emotion gives rise to deep, pure wines, carried by a salinity and vivacity that will see them through the years with ease.
The strength of Domaine Bernard Moreau also lies in its two red cuvées, which seduce with their concentrated aromas and balanced textures. Chassagne Montrachet Villages and Premier Cru La Cardeuse remind us that, historically, the terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet were planted with black grapes and are ideal for the production of great red wines.
Thanks to the consistent quality of its wines, Domaine Bernard Moreau is an icon of Chassagne-Montrachet. From the 2021 vintage onwards, the labels of the domaine’s wines will appear under the name Alexandre Moreau.
