The Tardy estate has gone through several generations of winemakers before it was finally recognized. Nestled in Vosne-Romanée’s Grand Cru setting, the domaine now enjoys a well-deserved reputation for producing some of the finest wines in its appellation.
The domaine’s family tradition is synonymous with excellence. The grandfather, Mr. Victor Tardy, was already producing wonderful wines … for a domain other than his own. For more than thirty years, the Tardy family looked after several parcels belonging to the Méo-Camuzet estate, including Nuits Saint Georges 1er cru “Aux Boudots”, Vosne-Romanée 1er cru “Les Chaumes” and Clos Vougeot Grand Cru. As the years went by, Jean Tardy gathered together various parcels and set up an estate of his own. From then on, he devoted himself exclusively to his estate.
His son Guillaume joined him in 1997 to complete his BTS in viticulture and winemaking and has been running the estate since 2003. With a wealth of formative experience in Australia at Domaine Picardy, Guillaume brings modernity while preserving the estate’s traditional viticultural practices.
Among the values shared by both generations, respect for the soil and the plant environment is at the top of the list. Carefully tended vines, with short winter pruning, thorough spring disbudding and systematic green harvesting in early summer, produce concentrated grapes rich in sugar and flavor.
The rest takes place in the cellar, where tradition is mastered and enhanced. 100% de-stemmed, the grapes have undergone pre-fermentation cold maceration since 2001, “in the pure Burgundian tradition”. Ageing takes place in new barrels for 16 to 20 months, depending on the plot. Precision is always the order of the day, giving rise to refined wines of incredible purity.
